Dasha + Taylor
DIY Barn wedding venue
Photographed by Isaac + Amy
Dasha & Taylor began their journey with us just like any other clients. They saw our work online, came into the studio, met & booked with us.
Their plan was ambitious – to build an entire barn on Dasha’s parents property – by hand.
We were pretty curious – two badass young snowboarders, just casually undertaking such a massive project. We wanted to know more.
About one year before the wedding, I made a trip up to Waipu to catch some of the progress in action.

Between us we hammered, sanded, painted, talked & laughed. This was the beginning of an awesome friendship – and as the wedding planning progressed, we kept up to date with everything overs drinks & dinners.[/flo_box]

The final result was – as you can see – incredible. It was so special for us to be there not only capturing the celebration on the wedding day, but sharing that moment as friends.
The wedding day itself was epic. On our drive up to the barn we noticed that all the beautiful white carrot-weed flowers were in full force. As we headed along the road towards the barn we kept seeing nearby fields and saying “OK – that one is awesome, and hardly any travel needed”… until we actually arrived at the barn. The fields surrounding the barn and ceremony area were WHITE with flowers – so perfect.
No need to go anywhere!
After they were pronounced husband & wife – Dasha & Taylor planted a willow tree at the spot where they stood – which will grow into a beautiful long standing reminder of the day.
While the gusts enjoyed tasty snacks and the lush rustic surroundings, we sneaked down the road to nearby Waipu caves for a few epic photos! It’s the first chance we’ve ever had to shoot inside a cave on a wedding day, and we were stoked that Dasha & Taylor were brave enough to trek across some super slippery mud to get into the perfect spot.
Once we returned, Dasha & Taylor opened the barn to welcome the guests inside – and kick off the evening proceedings. There was so much laughter, plenty of tears (Taylor’s Dad learning his speech in Russian ensured that), and wrapped up with one of the most – no – THE most incredible first dance we have witnessed in more than 500 weddings. Some serious choreography went into that – and they nailed the performance perfectly!
At the very end of the night, we noticed that the barn was empty – guests enjoying the dancefloor in the tipi tent or warming themselves around the fire. So we wrapped things up with a romantic fairy light photo inside the barn that had taken up every spare moment of their time for the previous two years.
This is just the smallest of sneak peeks to give you an insight into the day. There are hundreds more – which we’ll look forward to sharing soon.
